The Stowe Winter Carnival Youth Hockey Tournament is a FUN tournament for teams throughout New England that play at similar competitive levels.

This year's tournament will include the following divisions:

  • 10U | 6 teams

  • 12U | 6 teams

  • 14U | 4 teams

Skills Competition:

Our skills competition will consist of a shootout and relay. Coaches of each team will be asked to nominate four skaters for the relay race and one shooter and one goalie for the shootout competition.

Level of Play:

USA Hockey Tier III.

Stowe Youth Hockey is an organization that has co ed  tier 3 and tier 4 teams. Stowe Youth Hockey will have one tier 3 level team in each age group of this tournament. 

This tournament is for the following levels:

  • Vermont tier 3 

  • New Hampshire Tier III

  • Massachusetts Tier III / B

  • Rhode Island B

  • Connecticut Tier III

  • Canada Minor B

  • New York B

Teams from large metro areas should consider this before applying. We will only take teams that are of a similar ability, and we permanently blacklist over-qualified trophy-hunting teams and organizations. We do everything we can to keep this a fun, evenly matched tournament where all teams are competitive.

Application Requirements:

  • One team per level per organization unless teams are equal level and appropriate

  • Tournament Fees $1500

  • Upon acceptance, preliminary roster must be emailed to the tournament director.

  • Upon acceptance, a NON REFUNDABLE deposit  of $750 is required to hold your spot

  • October 1st: Full Roster Balance due

  • November 1st: Official signed USA Hockey / Hockey Canada rosters due

  • Cancellations: We will refund half of the paid amount if we are able to replace your team.

Cancellation Policy:

We will refund HALF of the paid amount if we are able to replace your team.

Returning Team Policy / Future Rights Policy:

  • All “returning team rights” are conditional upon SYH approval for future participation. ie: If we have had discipline, competitive, or sportsmanship issues with a team or organization, we reserve the right to deny future participation to any team or organization.

Tournament Format:

  • Tournament Headquarters: The Stowe Arena in the Village of Stowe

  • THREE Game guarantee**, not including Championship or Bronze Medal Games

  • ALL games will be played at Stowe Arena in the Village of Stowe

  • 10u/12u/14u teams will play a 4 or 6 team bracket

  • Time outs allowed in Championship and Consolation games only.

  • Standings determined by points, wins, Head to Head, goals against, penalty minutes, coin toss if still tied.

  • Each game worth 5 points: 2 pts to game winner, 1 pt per period winner

  • In the event of a championship or consolation game tie, a five minute stopped time, 4 on 4, sudden death, overtime period will be played. If the score is still tied, a three man shoot-out will be held to determine a winner. Visiting team shoots first. If after the first three shooters, the score is still tied, a sudden death shoot-out (one skater each) shall continue until a winner is determined. All skaters on the players’ bench are required to shoot before a player may shoot for a second time.

On-Ice Rules and Regulations:

  • USA Hockey and VSAHA Sanctioned Tournament

  • USA Hockey rules apply

  • No checking at 10u & 12u Levels per USAH 2013-14

  • Period Lengths:

  • 10u:  10-10-10

  • 12u: 12-12-12

  • 14u: 15-15-15

  • Running time will be used in the 3rd period of lopsided games where there is a goal differential of 6.

  • Teams must be ready to play 15 minutes prior to game time. We are running a VERY tight schedule to maximize participation, so we try to stay ahead as much as we can.

  • All eligible players must be listed on their tournament rosters.

  • All players and coaches must be USA Hockey registered.

  • All games will be played to completion.

  • Players receiving 4 penalties in one game will be automatically ejected.

  • Players ejected from 2 games will be automatically suspended from the tournament.

  • Fighting will not be tolerated. Offending players will be suspended from the tournament.

Code of Conduct:

It is the intent of Stowe Youth Hockey to provide a fun and competitive tournament for all of the participants and all of the spectators. Games can and should be competitive and hard fought, but also fun and clean. Good Sportsmanship is expected of all participants. Improper and abusive behavior will not be tolerated from players OR fans!

It is the responsibility of each coach to control his team, team parents and exemplify good sportsmanship. Officials and Tournament Officials have the right to discipline and/or eject anyone upon their discretion, up to and including using security officials and police.

We rarely have any real issues, but we watch everything closely and teams with difficult, aggressive, or belligerent players, coaches, or fans will be blacklisted from future participation. This is YOUTH hockey and is about the players.

Stowe is a beautiful Vermont resort town and this will be right in the middle of ski season. We have moved the tournament earlier in December to avoid the holiday weekends and other Stowe events which make hotel rooms more scarce and more costly.
